Joined this burgeoning sales and marketing rev-gen platform to build its first UX team from scratch. Three years later, we’re nearing 20 people: local managers, interaction designers, UI designers, and writers on two continents.
SENIOR UX MANAGER (2015-2018)
Neustar, Inc.
I led UX for Neustar’s PlatformOne product, which allows digital marketers to plan and construct advertising campaigns; to understand whether existing campaigns are reaching the right audiences; and to learn if their ad dollars are being spent efficiently. I provided both hands-on design (wireframes, mocks, and prototypes), as well as helping shape and prioritize product and feature strategies with our product managers. I also worked on a mobile app for Neustar’s Security Services products, providing feedback on its flows, creating a visual design and supporting documentation, and facilitating communication with third-party app developers.
CX LEAD / INTERACTION DESIGNER (2015)
Wells Fargo
As a contractor with Wells Fargo's CX (Customer Experience) team, I worked primarily within their Services Studio. My projects focused on interfaces in the bank's authenticated space (i.e. the things you see after you've entered a password). In addition to crafting interaction designs, I also played the role of CX Lead: helping to define the project's scope, as well as hours and weekly allocation for the team; offering feedback on individual team members' work; and acting as the primary point of contact between CX and stakeholders on the product and business side.
UX DIRECTOR (2013-2015)
Actuate Corp./OpenText
Managed an in-house UX design team, working to support and improve our browser-based software on an iterative basis (from concept to design to front-end development to usability testing). The team also designed reference applications demonstrating how developers can integrate our technology into desktop- and tablet-based apps. As a side-line, we provided visual design services for the company as a whole.
SENIOR UX DESIGNER (2012-2013)
Actuate Corp.
Conducted competitive research and drafted user profiles. Created wireframes and flows for several browser-based data visualization applications as part of a redesign and consolidation of Actuate’s iHub product line. Provided direction and feedback to junior team members. Drafted testing protocols, conducted user testing sessions, prepared usability reports and recommendations, and oversaw implementation of our findings across the product line.
LITIGATION ASSOCIATE (2008-2012)
Covington & Burling
Represented commercial clients in consumer, antitrust, and securities class actions, as well as government investigations. Authored trial, appellate, and amicus briefs. Deposed named plaintiffs in class actions, interviewed potential witnesses in government investigations, and prepared witnesses for trial testimony.
UX CONSULTANT (2002-2006)
Self-employed
Designed web-based interfaces; conducted site reviews and usability audits; planned content strategies; and developed content for websites, web-based applications, and handheld devices. Clients included: Mills College, Time Warner Cable, Kaleidescape, Oral-B, Avaya, Bay Area Air Quality Management District, Chela Financial, nCircle.
DIRECTOR OF CONTENT STRATEGY (1999-2002)
Addwater
Directed the content and IA practices of a 60-person design and branding agency. Led design of websites (consumer- and business-facing), internet-enabled ATMs, and web-based applications. Designed and facilitated usability studies and marketing research groups. Also led messaging strategy, naming, and content creation for print and strategy clients. Managed in-house staff and supplemental contractors. Clients included: Blue Nile, Bluelight, Chevron, Wells Fargo, NapaStyle, NEC Solutions America, Palm, SF Bay to Breakers, Wind River, Lante, Fender Guitars, Currenex, ADP, Bare Escentuals, and Plantronics.
SENIOR CONTENT STRATEGIST (1999)

Led or participated in development of content strategy for web projects, from initial strategy and site concept through creation of nomenclature and content. Worked closely with IA team to create navigation models. Clients: includedHP, Janus Mutual Funds, Peet's Coffee, Hallmark.
UX AND CONTENT CONSULTANT (1997-1999)

Wrote copy for print (brochures, advertisements, packaging) and websites. Created information architecture and navigation models for websites. Clients included: Logitech, Joe Boxer, Restaurant LuLu Gourmet Products, Liquid Audio, FOX X-Files website, Reel.com, Ziff Davis, Interval Research, Smith and Hawken, Bettag Studios, and Outcast Communications.
PRODUCTION MANAGER (1994-1997)
Spotted Dog Graphics
Managed all production for print design agency: worked with printers, output houses, and paper reps to quote and plan printing; directed production artists in creation of print-ready files; check proofs and attended press checks. Oversaw production of on-going print and digital publications produced by agency.
EDITOR (1990-1993)
Bay Area Council for Soviet Jews
One of two managing editors for a weekly publication covering political developments and ethnic issues in the USSR and its successor states. Handled communications with correspondents in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kiev, Riga, and Tashkent. Wrote and edited articles based on correspondent reports, wire-service offerings, and interviews with prominent dissidents and emigres.
